Biography: Lewis Carroll was born on January 27, 1832 in Daresbury, England with the name Cahrles Dodgson. When he was older he became a math teacher at Oxford and was known to be very serious, but what people didn't know is that he loved creating funny, childish poems. When he wrote poems that is when he used the name Lewis Carroll and for some time only the editors knew who Lewis Carroll really was. Lewis Carroll is most famous for writing the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 and then the sequel in 1871. He also wrote a famous poem called "The Hunting of the Snark" in 1876. He sadly dies in 1898.
The Crocodile Lewis Carroll
Horrors Lewis Carroll
HOW doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!
Methought I walked a dimsal place
Horrors all around
The air thick with many a face
And black as night the ground
Poem Analysis:
1. I liked this poem because it is
easy and fun to read. I also like it
because I can relate to it. I have had
nightmares before that seem so real
that when I wake up I am sweating.
How cheerfully he seems to grin!
How neatly spread his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!
I saw a monster come with speed
Its face of grimmliest green
On human beings used to feed
Most dreadful to be seen
2. The poetic devices used in the
poem are symbols and similes. The
symbol is the monster represents a
nightmare, and the simile is the part
of the poem were it says "black as night the ground.
Poem Analysis:
1. I liked this poem because it
reminds me of living in New
Hampshire and going to the
beach everyday during the
summer. When I swam
out to the dock I would
look down in the water and
it was dark and I saw shadows.
I always had a fear of a
snapping turtle biting at my toes.
Though this poem is talking about
crocociles, the poem makes a
crocodile kind of cheerful and
friendly, and if you have ever seen a
snapping turte they are slow, and
some have very beautiful shells.
It just makes you want to pick it
up when it is just inviting you to get
your finger snapped off.
2. The major poetic device in this
poem is personification, which
is giving human like qualities to
animals or objects.When Lewis
Carroll say "cheerfully he
seems to grin" it is personification
because crocodiles can't really grin
only humans can. Also when he
says"With gently smiling jaws" it is
personification because again only
humans can smile.
3. The rhyme scheme in this poem
is ABAB CDCD which means that
every other word rhymes in each stanza.
4. I think the theme of this poem is
that an animal or even a human
might look nice, and very friendly,
but they are really out to get you.
I could not speak, I could not fly
I fell down in that place
I saw the monster's horrid eye
Come leering in my face
Amidst my scarcely-stiffled groans
Amidst my moaning deep
I heard a voice "Wake! Mr. Jones
Your screaming in your sleep"
Punctuality Lewis Carroll
Man Naturally loves delay,
And to procrastinate;
Business put off from day to day
Is always done to late
Let every hour be in its place
Firm fixed, nor loosely shift,
And well enjoy the vacant space,
As though a birthday gift.
And when the hour arrives, be there,
Where'er that "there" may be;
Uncleanly hands or ruffled hair
Let no one ever see.
If dinner at "half-past" be placed,
At "half-past" then be dressed.
If at a "quarter-past" make haste
To be down with the rest
Better to be before you time,
Than e're to be behind;
To open the door while strikes the chime,
That shows a punctual mind.
Moral:
Let punctuality and care
Seize every flitting hour,
So shalt thou cull a floweret fair,
E'en from a fading flower
Lewis Carroll
3. The theme of the poem is ABAB
CDCD EFEF GHGH which means every
other line rhymes in each stanza.
4. I think the theme of this poem is that
dreams can seem so real, but they really
aren't.
Poem Analysis:
1. I liked this poem because it talks
about how man loves to delay and
procrastinate which is very true. It
reminds me of all the projects I have had
at school that seem to be put off to the
side.
2. A poetic device used in the poem is
symbol which is the word man because it
doen't really mean just man it means
every one.
3. The rhyme scheme in this poem is
ABABCDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ which
means every other word in each stanza
rhymes.
4. The theme of this poem is that we
shouldn't procrastinate because it doesn't
do us any good.
